Not too long ago, we received a plea for help that began like so . . .

“Can you fix my letter tat is missing ere—the one tat is to the left of j does not work—do I ave to take the computer in to get it fixed? It is a mechanical ting as the word spell corrector puts the letter in—like in the word the.”

. . . and continued thusly:

“I mean, I don't know tat it is mechanical because the key goes down and feels like it should work—and ten the spell checker puts it in were it is obviously missing . . .”

Given the abundance of clues provided in the victim’s electronic correspondence, we quickly deduced that she had lost her ‘h’. Further inquiry showed that the letter in question had vanished quite suddenly; the client recalled it functioning normally and then suddenly not functioning at all. A service call was suggested and the mechanical fault was subsequently repaired.
